Job Description : ASM KENYA The Area Sales Manager is responsible for driving sales, ensuring product availability, and achieving revenue targets across a specified geographic area. This role involves managing and developing relationships with distributors, retailers, and other key stakeholders in the general trade sector. The ASM will work closely with the sales team to execute sales strategies, increase market penetration, and ensure that FMCG products are distributed effectively across retail outlets in the assigned territory. Key Responsibilities: Sales Strategy Development & Execution: Develop and execute the sales strategy for the designated area, focusing on increasing market share and achieving sales targets. Analyze the market trends, competitor activities, and customer needs to create tailored sales plans. Work with the sales team to ensure consistent product visibility and promotion at retail outlets. Distributor & Retailer Management: Manage and nurture relationships with distributors, wholesalers, and retailers to ensure effective product distribution in the general trade market. Oversee order management, ensuring timely delivery, stock replenishment, and product availability at retail points. Provide training, support, and regular feedback to retailers and distributors to improve sales performance and increase shelf space for products. Ensure adherence to sales targets, payment terms, and promotional activities with retail partners. Team Leadership & Management: Lead and mentor a team of Sales Executives or Sales Representatives, providing guidance on sales techniques, product knowledge, and territory management. Monitor the teams performance, set individual goals, and conduct regular performance reviews to ensure targets are met. Foster a collaborative and high-performance culture within the team, encouraging innovation, accountability, and initiative. Market Development & Expansion: Identify and develop new business opportunities in untapped markets within the assigned area. Build strong relationships with new and existing customers to drive brand loyalty and long-term business growth. Ensure that all retail outlets in the territory are covered and receive adequate support for product promotions and sales activities. Sales Target Achievement & Reporting: Set and achieve monthly, quarterly, and annual sales targets for the area, ensuring alignment with broader company objectives. Track and analyze sales performance and market dynamics to identify areas of improvement or untapped potential. Prepare regular sales reports for senior management, providing insights on sales growth, challenges, and opportunities in the territory. Product Launches & Promotions: Coordinate the execution of new product launches, ensuring proper visibility and availability of products across retail outlets. Plan and implement local sales promotions and marketing campaigns to increase product visibility and drive consumer demand. Work closely with the marketing team to ensure that in-store promotions and campaigns are in line with regional market needs and sales objectives. Inventory Management & Stock Monitoring: Monitor stock levels at key retail points and work with distributors to ensure product availability at all times. Identify slow-moving stock or stockouts and take necessary actions to ensure adequate replenishment and minimize stock loss. Customer Service & Relationship Building: Ensure high levels of customer satisfaction by addressing issues promptly and providing excellent service to customers. Act as the primary point of contact for all customer queries related to orders, stock, and product offerings. Build strong, long-term relationships with retail partners to enhance brand loyalty and trust. Competitor Analysis: Monitor competitor activities within the area and provide actionable insights to senior management for product positioning and sales strategies. Implement pricing, product, and promotional strategies to effectively compete with rival brands and capture market share. Compliance & Administration: Ensure all sales activities comply with company policies, industry regulations, and ethical standards. Maintain accurate records of sales, inventory, payments, and customer feedback. Manage the administrative tasks related to sales operations, including reporting, order processing, and tracking KPIs. Preferred candidate profile Sales & Negotiation Skills: Proven ability to drive sales growth and meet targets consistently. Strong negotiation skills to secure favorable terms with distributors, retailers, and other stakeholders. Excellent persuasive communication skills to influence and motivate customers, partners, and team members. Market & Product Knowledge: In-depth knowledge of the FMCG market, including product categories, consumer preferences, and general trade operations. Awareness of competitor products, pricing strategies, and promotional activities to stay competitive in the market. Understanding of consumer buying behavior and the ability to apply this knowledge to sales strategies. Team Leadership & Management: Strong leadership capabilities to manage, inspire, and develop a high-performing sales team. Experience in coaching and mentoring sales representatives and driving team success. Ability to manage team dynamics, resolve conflicts, and foster a collaborative environment. Relationship Management: Strong interpersonal skills to build and maintain relationships with distributors, retailers, and key stakeholders. Ability to develop long-term business relationships and ensure customer satisfaction through effective communication and support. Communication Skills: Strong verbal and written communication skills for effective interaction with internal teams, clients, and senior management. Ability to present ideas, reports, and recommendations clearly and concisely. Educational Requirements: Bachelor's degree in Business Administration, Marketing, Sales, or a related field. Experience: 8+ years of experience in FMCG sector, with a focus on general trade (distributors, wholesalers, retailers). Proven track record of achieving sales targets and managing a team. Experience in managing multiple accounts, sales territories, and working with diverse clients.
