Chief Technical Officer

Job Description : Chief Technical Manager The Technical leadership for a multi-site South African mining group, driving engineering excellence, innovation, and production optimization across all operations. This senior executive role reports to the CEO/MD and has oversight of Mining Engineering, Plant/Process Engineering, Geology, Maintenance, and R&D/Technology functions. The CTM ensures integration of technical disciplines, compliance with mining regulations, and deployment of advanced technologies to meet production and safety targets. This position requires a visionary leader who can translate business objectives into technical strategy and foster a culture of continuous improvement. Qualifications Engineering Degree: BEng or BSc (minimum undergraduate level) in Mining, Metallurgical, Mechanical, Electrical or Geological Engineering (an ECSA-accredited degree is required). A relevant postgraduate degree (e.g. MEng, MSc) or an MBA (with strong emphasis on operations/strategy) is preferred to equip the CTO with business and management acumen. Continuous professional development (CPD) courses in mining technology, safety and management are advantageous. Professional Registration & Certifications ECSA Registration: Registration as a Professional Engineer (Pr Eng) with the Engineering Council of South Africa is expected, reflecting formal recognition of engineering competence and experience. Mine Managers’ Certificate: A valid Government Certificate of Competency (Mine Manager’s Certificate) under the Mine Health and Safety Act is required for senior mining technical roles. Professional Memberships: Membership in SAIMM (Southern African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy) or similar bodies (e.g. SAIMM, AMRE) is highly desirable for professional networking and staying current with industry practices. Other registrations (e.g. SAMREC SAMVAL qualifications, SACNASP for geologists) are a plus. Experience Industry Tenure: Minimum 15 years of progressive experience in the South African mining sector (coal and/or hard-rock mining).
